Sick & Tired: A Series Examining Health Disparities Among Racial Minorities in Kentucky

Thirty years ago, the federal government undertook a comprehensive examination of health disparities among African-Americans and other minority groups in the United States. The Heckler Report, as it came to be known, was the first of its kind. It offered a deep analysis of the health status of minorities and recommendations for how to improve it.

Sick & Tired is a four-part web and radio series by WFPL Health Reporter Ja’Nel Johnson. It looks at the health gaps that remain for racial minorities in Kentucky three decades after that groundbreaking report.

WFPL News will also host a community conversation on racial health disparities in Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The event will be moderated by Johnson and coincides with her Sick & Tired series.

Sick & Tired was reported and produced as part of The Next Louisville: Community Health project, a partnership of WFPL, the Community Foundation of Louisville and the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. More stories can be found here.
